Visual identity vs branding: what you are really buying

The words branding and visual identity are used interchangeably, even though they refer to two different services with different budgets. Three questions to the provider are enough to work out what you are really buying.

A costly misunderstanding

When an SME in French-speaking Switzerland asks for a quote for “complete branding”, it typically receives proposals ranging from CHF 3,000 to CHF 80,000, for services that look identical on paper.

The word “branding” means everything and nothing, hence the gap. Some providers use it to sell a visual identity (logo + palette + typefaces + stationery). Others use it to sell a complete brand strategy (positioning, platform, values, tone, visual identity), and behind the same word, the content and budget bear no comparison.

To work out what to buy for your needs, you first have to understand the difference between the two.

Branding in the broad sense: brand strategy

Branding in the strict sense is the construction of your brand as a strategic entity. It comes before the visual identity and includes:

Positioning: who you are, who you are talking to, what sets you apart. Strategic thinking work, often done with a consultant or a brand strategist.

Brand platform: your mission, your values, your personality, your promise. An internal reference document that guides every communication decision.

Tone of voice: how you speak (formal, friendly, direct, expert, approachable). Precise criteria on vocabulary, sentence length, and which references are allowed or banned.

Narrative: your history, your origin story, your key messages.

Brand architecture: if you have several products or sub-brands, how they fit together.

A complete strategic branding service in French-speaking Switzerland costs CHF 15,000 to 80,000 and takes 4 to 12 weeks. It is generally provided by a brand strategy agency or a senior consultant, not by a freelance designer.

Visual identity: the graphic translation of the brand

Visual identity is the graphic translation of your brand. It includes:

Logo: your distinctive mark. Colour palette: 3 to 8 colours with precise hex/RGB/Pantone codes. Typefaces: 1 to 3 fonts with a hierarchy of use. Iconography: a consistent icon style. Photography / illustration: the visual style to use. Templates: presentations, stationery, social media, email signature. Brand book: a document that formalises all of this, with usage rules.

A complete visual identity in French-speaking Switzerland costs CHF 3,000 to 25,000 depending on the scope, takes 2 to 6 weeks, and is provided by a senior freelance designer or a design agency.

The trap in the word “branding”

Many providers in Switzerland say “branding” instead of “visual identity” because the word sounds more strategic and justifies a higher price, which misleads the client about what they are buying.

To clarify what you are really buying, ask the provider 3 precise questions:

Question 1: “Do you work on the positioning and the brand platform, or only on the graphic translation?”

If the answer is “the graphic translation”, it is visual identity. If it is “both”, ask to see the exact scope of the strategic part (how many hours, which deliverable).

Question 2: “How many hours go into strategy versus design?”

A complete branding service typically includes 30 to 50% strategy (research, workshops, thinking). If the answer is “we start straight away with the logo”, it is visual identity.

Question 3: “Which strategic deliverables do I receive?”

A branding service delivers a positioning document, a brand platform, a tone-of-voice guide and a narrative. If you are only promised visual files, it is visual identity.

What to choose for your situation

You are launching a new brand, with strong ambitions: you need complete branding (strategy + visual identity). Budget: CHF 25,000 to 80,000. A structural investment that pays off over 5 to 10 years.

You have a brand that works but a dated visual identity: you need a visual identity redesign without touching the positioning. Budget: CHF 5,000 to 25,000. The strategy is already there.

You run an SME that is just starting out, on a tight budget: you need a basic visual identity (logo, palette, typography, simple applications). Market budget: CHF 3,000 to 8,000. The positioning will come later, or takes shape as you go.

You are a post-Series A scale-up with an already recognisable brand: you can benefit from a brand strategy upgrade without redoing everything visually. Budget: CHF 15,000 to 40,000 for strategy alone.

The opposite trap: over-strategy

Some premium agencies push towards over-strategy: 6 months of brand platform work for an SME with 5 employees. It is a waste of time and money.

For 80% of Swiss SMEs that are starting out or have fewer than 20 employees, a solid visual identity is enough. You can do without a 3-day workshop on brand values with a senior facilitator at CHF 3,000 / day: you know your values, and what you lack is their professional graphic translation.

Strategic branding becomes relevant once you have:

  • 30+ employees (the need to align a team around a shared vision)
  • 2+ brands in the portfolio (architecture)
  • A mass-market B2C brand with strong ambitions
  • A luxury brand or a purely premium positioning
  • An international brand that has to work across several cultures

Otherwise, a well-made visual identity covers 95% of the need.
