How to choose an SEO agency in French-speaking Switzerland: 8 screening criteria
Screening SEO agencies in French-speaking Switzerland is frustrating: transparency is rare, and so is any real commitment to execution. These 8 criteria help you avoid unpleasant surprises.

Why screening is hard
In French-speaking Switzerland in 2026, more than 200 agencies and freelancers claim SEO expertise. They all offer free audits, talk about strategy and promise you an improvement, and most of them deliver little of what they promise. No reliable comparison service or recognised quality label lets you measure a provider’s competence objectively before you sign.
The cost of a bad choice is high: an SEO retainer at CHF 2,000 per month for 12 months comes to CHF 24,000. Without results, that is CHF 24,000 thrown away. Worse, if the agency uses aggressive techniques (PBNs, unchecked AI content, offshore link building), your site can be penalised by Google and take 12 to 24 months to recover.
With 8 screening criteria, you can filter out 90% of problematic providers. Use them as a checklist before any commitment.
Criterion 1: A contractual commitment to execution (and caution about ranking guarantees)
This is the criterion that tells agencies apart most clearly. A serious SEO agency commits by contract to what it controls, the quality of execution: an enforceable framework covering the audit, editorial production at the announced pace, ongoing optimisation and transparent monthly reporting. These commitments can be checked and measured, and they are what protects you.
Conversely, be wary of agencies that “guarantee a top 3 spot” or promise “first page or your money back”. Nobody controls Google’s algorithm: promising a precise position is, at best, marketing and, at worst, a sign that the agency is exploiting an information gap (and often makes up for it with aggressive techniques that expose your site to a penalty).
It is legitimate, on the other hand, to set realistic ranking targets (for example, aiming for the top 10 and then the top 3 on defined keywords) and to commit to tracking them transparently, without guaranteeing them.
Question to ask: “What exactly do you commit to by contract, and how can I check it month after month?”
If the answer is a ranking promise with a number on it, be careful. If it is a clear commitment to execution and transparency (with direct access to Search Console), that is a good sign. Most Swiss SEO agencies stay vague (“we work seriously”) or oversell a guaranteed top 3. A minority (Voren among them) commit to what an agency controls: execution.
Criterion 2: A written, explainable methodology
Before any commitment, a serious agency gives you a written methodology: an audit in X steps, content production in Y steps, backlink acquisition in Z steps, with precise deliverables, deadlines and responsibilities.
Question to ask: “Can you send me your standard methodology and an example of an audit carried out for another client (anonymised)?”
If the methodology fits on a single slide or is incomprehensible (“we optimise the ranking factors”), the agency does not have one.
Criterion 3: Verifiable case studies with hard figures
An agency that has worked on real projects can share case studies with figures: Google rankings before and after, organic traffic before and after, conversions generated, backed by Search Console screenshots and measured data.
Question to ask: “Can you show me 3 case studies with before-and-after figures, backed by Search Console screenshots?”
If everything is confidential or the figures are vague (“we doubled the traffic”, with no context or source), there is not much to show.
Criterion 4: Transparency about the content produced
Many SEO agencies outsource content production to offshore writers or to raw AI, and end up delivering thin, generic content that does not rank and can be penalised by Google’s Helpful Content Updates.
Question to ask: “Who writes the content at your agency? Can you show me a recent article written for a client?”
If the answer is evasive or the examples are generic, watch out. Quality content requires native writers who master both the language and the subject.
Criterion 5: A clean, explained backlink strategy
Link building is the riskiest part of SEO in 2026. Aggressive techniques (PBNs, mass buying of backlinks, link farms) trigger manual or algorithmic Google penalties.
Question to ask: “What is your backlink acquisition strategy? Can you explain the sources and their quality?”
An acceptable answer includes: quality Swiss directories (local.ch, search.ch, chambers of commerce), local citations, digital PR, targeted editorial exchanges, guest posts on relevant sites. It rules out buying backlinks, PBNs and offshore techniques.
Criterion 6: Transparent, accessible reporting
Monthly reporting should show actual rankings, traffic and conversions, and the client should have direct access to Search Console and Analytics, in addition to the summarised monthly PDF.
Question to ask: “Will I have direct access to Google Search Console and to your real-time tracking dashboard?”
If direct access is refused or only a monthly PDF is offered, watch out. You will not be able to check whether what you are shown is true.
Criterion 7: No commitments on artificial keywords
An unreliable SEO agency will commit to keywords with no competition and no transactional intent (obscure long-tail terms, odd variations). Those rankings are easy for the agency to get and bring you nothing.
Question to ask: “Which keywords are you committing to, and what is their search intent? Are they transactional or informational?”
If the proposed keywords are generic, with no volume and no competition (which you can check in Google Keyword Planner), they are commercially worthless.
Criterion 8: Human and geographical fit
SEO is a long-term discipline. Solid results take 12 to 36 months minimum. Working with a team you do not get along with, or one based 8 time zones away, will frustrate everyone.
Question to ask: “Who will be my main contact? How long am I committed for? How often will we meet?”
A serious agency offers you a dedicated contact, clear availability and at least one live meeting a month. For an SEO retainer in French-speaking Switzerland, a contact based in Switzerland or in neighbouring France is strongly preferable.
The decision grid in practice
Compare the agencies you are evaluating against these 8 criteria. Score each one out of 10. An agency scoring 60+/80 deserves serious consideration. Below that, move on.

Common mistakes made by SMEs in French-speaking Switzerland
Mistake 1 · Choosing on price. An agency at CHF 800 per month will not deliver the same work as an agency at CHF 3,000. SEO is an investment, and its cost should be judged against what it brings in.
Mistake 2 · Choosing on the sales pitch. An agency’s salesperson is often excellent (that is their job), but the deliverable is another matter. Assess the agency against the criteria above, and set aside your gut feeling from the first meeting.
Mistake 3 · Wanting results too fast. SEO produces results after 3 to 6 months at the earliest. Any promise of results in 4 weeks is suspect.
Mistake 4 · Multiplying providers. Having 2 or 3 agencies working in parallel and contradicting each other harms your SEO. Choose a single one, and commit to it fully.
Mistake 5 · Forgetting to measure. If you do not measure (rankings, traffic, conversions) before and during the engagement, you will not know whether it is working. This happened to 60% of the SMEs in French-speaking Switzerland that had an SEO retainer in 2024-2025.
